Shot my second NY bear with a Martin(08 Moab, 63 lbs, 29"), this one while on the ground still hunting. Quartering to, 20 yard shot with a NAP Nitron tipped CX Maxima Hunter; she ran 30 yds and was down in sight.

Thanks everyone. :D

In response to the questions about how we hunt black bear in NY: no bait, no dogs(anymore), long seasons, everyone gets a tag w/ license. They really try to keep the numbers down to avoid conflicts with people. For hunting NY is divided into North and South, I live in the Northern Zone, mostly woods and mountains. The bear season is long, starts in mid Sept with rifles. Not many bowhunters up North: last year 606 bears were taken on the Adirondack region, only 39 by bowhunters: in my county 61 were taken, only 1 by bow.

There were lots of bears around last Fall looking for food; I kept hearing reports of them close to here. Sounded like they were headed North and I did the same, trying a couple spots; mostly after deer but figured I might get lucky with the bears. I really wasn't expecting to run into them, it was the afternoon of the first ever youth hunt in NY for deer. I was still hunting along slowly when I glanced to my left and spotted what first looked like two people, it was two bears both were standing up. They were downwind and must have smelled me. I dropped to my knees, next thing they were at 20 yds and headed at me; drew back, aimed and it was all over in less than a minute.

Got my first bear from a treestand 5 years ago, I had seen some tracks but was looking for deer; a young male feeding on acorns walked right under me. Later my neighbor told me he had seen him stealing tomatoes from his garden. Saw a smaller bear alone the next week that year. Saw my first and only other bears while bowhunting in Oct. a couple years earler, a sow with two full grown cubs; they left sign all over the mountain near the oaks that year, really liked the chesnut oaks.

Here's a link to the latest report, just released: New York State Black Bear Harvest Summary 2012 (http://www.dec.ny.gov/docs/wildlife_pdf/bb12summary.pdf)

Congrats on the bear Capt.

I just pulled my tag here for Wisconsin "C" zone for this next fall. It took me 4 years of applying to get the kill tag. In our northern areas it can take 10 years of applying to get a tag.

I see bears every year while bow hunting whitetails. I hope I do this next year! I'll be baiting them though, dogs aren't allowed in the "C" zone. They do run dogs in the northern areas.

for the Oregon guys head up toward Goble/ St. Helens, set up a stand, or still hunt, your choice, they are all over my friends place, up by the rock quarry, above the goble tavern/ Boat launch you may be able to talk to the guys there ( at the quarry) and get in the back side( North) to do a little harvestin.
there are 3 that I know of in the area

Some of us Oregon guys have plenty of bears to try and harvest. I've been chasin the one in my avatar ever since he showed up on my trail camera, ( the photo over there in the upper left ) 15 minutes after I changed the batteries in the trail cam. In the same area, we ran a string of 3 cameras, over that summer, we indentifed 12 differnt bears, all within a 3 mile strech, 6 miles from home. He's smarter than I am, so far! :D Photos below where taken a week apart, same spot. Slightly differnt angle, 3rd pic is what changed the angle. In the last pic, you can see the stick that has the two white dibbons on it, laying down, the result of the 1st pic. I figure that he's 42" tall at his shoulders.

Was this gov land , or guided. I want to go on a bear hunt next spring, it will probably have to be guided, I know nothing about bear hunting. I know north Florida was full of black bears when I hunted there.

The area I was talking about is Timber company property, behind locked gates, but accessable for the general public by foot, or bicycle, no moterized vehicles, but it is subject to fire control issues. Cannot build a blind on Timber company property. Have had one trail camera stolen, and one broken trying to steal it.

Passed through the shoulder blade and into the vitals, down in 30 yds; that's why I like small broadheads.

Thanks.

Very nice looking bear. Big congrats on getting it still hunting - definitely not an easy thing to do. I too really like my ASAT 3D leafy suit and attribute some of my ability to get close to animals and not spook them to its ability to break-up my human form so well.
