View Full Version : Bowstring wax question
I've just made myself a string wax - 50:50 bee wax and vaseline. Is it ok and can i use it on a compound bow? I intend to use it on my recurves, but if it's ok for compounds that'd be a nice bonus :) What do you guys think of this?

Probably it'll work You won't know till you try it. However, with most synthetics today it is recommended to use some sort of wax with a silicon base to add slippiness within the bundle which helps keep the strands from being abrasive to each other.
Something a lot of people don't realize is that you can put too much wax on a string. It should not have so much that it's gooked on. Apply by rubbing it on lengthwaise as usual. Then Rub it in using thumb and index finger. Then take a length of thread or dental floss wrapped around the string/cables and pull from the end servings toward the center serving. This removes excess wax that is just sticking to the exterior. All this excess wax does is gather dirt and other grit which causes abrasion. Once you do this then rub again with the fingers creating enough heat to make it sink into the material
Your done. Now, depending on how much you shoot do it again avery couple months. As an example, I shoot somewhere around 8000 shots a year and wax mine maybe four times during the year. I don't know why, but I rarely ever get any fuzzies or anything. Some guys do, but I don't. Maybe it's because I don't abuse my equipment.
Thanks for the good tip, Barry! The only 2 kinds of string wax we have here are Bohning and Barnett crossbow wax - there aren't written any ingredients on any of them  I use the Bohning on the MOAB but can't say that i like it very much. I wax my MOAB quite often, may be too often but am worried of fraying - have no idea how will be able to change the string - the guy from the bowshop told me that they have import from the US once a year and because of our lousy customs office i can't order via internet. Nevermind, my factory string is still ok :) As for the homemade wax i'll test it and report the results - it costs less then a $ and may be the traditional shooters will be interested in making themseves some.

Just something you may want to research some . . . Vaseline is a petroleum based product. I would want to know the effect (if any) petroleum has on the string material before I went too far with it. Just a thought.
I also thought of this but don't see how it can harm the string. I'll test it and if there's a problem i'll write here. :)
