Well, cleaning up after the flood I've found a few things that I've forgot about. One is something I've never heard spoken of. I have a release trigger release. Yes, release trigger release. Perhaps some in might know what a release trigger is if Trap gun is noted. Just a trigger where you hold it back and held it go to fire. Back when I was Trap shooting every weekend and I mean every weekend I got to try a friends Browning over and under with release trigger. His Browning was of the higher end Brownings, not some run of the mill Citroi. So you shoulder, come to form (yes, form) pull the trigger and hold, call for the target and swinging through the target you release the trigger. Bang. Broken target. Well, if you the hit the target. Friend let me try until I was busting one target right after another. Gots to say it was neat.

I can't remember the name of the release. It is of the glove type wrist index release. Yes, you can fire it normal. And perhaps the manfacturer doesn't even know it will work as a release trigger release.

And I can't even remember how I found out. More than likely I was in tizzy of some sort. I went to snap the release head on the string and some how I had pressed the jaws together and pulled the trigger. Yeah, I was stunned, trigger back and jaws shut. When I let up my index finger the jaws opened.
Well, I had to try this. I figured out how to clamp the jaws on the string and pull with the index finger. Took I bit, but I came to full draw. Got on target and wham! The arrow was gone. Now that was what I called a surprise release, a real surprise release. I got use to it and shot it a bunch, but it took long to set compared to just snapping on the string. Never got brave enough to try it in competition.

I'll try to get a picture of the full release. Slip hand in, pull strap to tighten and you're ready. Pull the string and the strap comes loose. Neat sucker.

Here's some pics and hopefully in order. Some one might recognize the head.
Jaws open
Jaws closed with trigger forward
Jaws closed with finger holding trigger back
Jaws open when finger releases trigger

During a 3D this past weekend I was informed one of my sidekicks had quit shooting. Said he was burned out. Well, he's too young to be burned out. And of all things I was informed he was really up in the air from being beat my a old man. So frustrated he had actually threw his bow some long distance into the timber. The 3D over and ratchet jawing with others I give him a call. He said he would come over, but wasn't shooting, so forget that. So I find out he had thrown his bow into the timber for sure. And beings it was a Elite bow I told him he should have left it there. That got him going. So to hasten things along I would stop at his house on the way home. Thinking "old man" I was one that would fill his ear but good.

So we talked. His burn out stems from him not doing what he should be, paying attention and doing things in order. "No reason in the world he should be beat by a old man" other than his own stupidity. And I related that this "old man" would clean his plow at the next 3D.

So I spend a hour with him and discussed form, check off list and more. When done he was of a much brighter attitude. And then I did dangle a pair of Stanislawski MoreX releases in his face and he got a bit more picked up.

Seems the simplest things can provoke one to give up archery and there's no senses to it. Archery is nothing repeating all throughout for each and every shot. You slip off the beaten path and you need some one to see it and have you get back on the path.

Don't blame the bow. That's the first thing I do, check a bow. If reasonably tuned and arrow flight good and I start on the shooter. I have this so many times over the past 5 years, shoot someone's bow and have great point of impact. May not be in the bull's eye, but the arrows all pile up in a neat little group. So that leaves the shooter.

Anyway, I hope my friend gets back on the "horse." Of course, nice guy me will be asking for a 40 point handicap ;) Not that I need it, but to razz his young butt.

My father was watching Eastman Outdoors on the Outdoor Channel last fall, and saw a picture of my grandfather with a trophy Dall sheep he had shot back in the early 60's. I sent Eastmans an e-mail, explaining who I was, and asking if they had any other pictures or footage. Gordon Eastman used to film my grandfather on a few of his hunts in Alaska, so I hoped they might. Guy Eastman replied, but said sadly they didn't. The film had degraded to the point it was useless. On a hunch, Guy then posted my e-mail on their website.

My grandfather was a big game hunter back in the 50's & 60"s. He passed away in 1973 when I was only 6 years old. The only real memories I have of him are few and far between. Mainly just stories I have heard from family, and people in our hometown who knew him. He was something of a local celebrity, and was semi-well known as a hunter nationwide. He'd been in advertisements for Hodgdon powders, Winchester, and a few others. Also had front page billing in the Jan. 1961 Field and Stream for an Alaskan trip that turned really bad. He and his guide were lost in Alaska for a week when their plane went down in a storm. Both survived miraculously enough.

Anyway, after a few months, Guy Eastman sent me an e-mail, asking if he could share my contact info with someone that had replied to the post he had put up on their website. I of course said yes. Someone had some old footage of his grandfather on a couple Alaskan hunts, and remembered hearing my grandfathers name mentioned in it. The person made a DVD copy of the footage, and sent it to me.

I received the DVD last week. I took it out to dad's to watch it. Told him it was just some old footage of a guy hunting in some of the same areas that grandpa used to. Well, 3 minutes into the DVD, there's my grandfather. 40 years after he passed away, and we were able to see him out doing what he loved best, hunting. There was a good 15-20 minutes of footage of him and a few other guys hunting Dall sheep and caribou, both of which grandpa got trophy animals. Those are two things I remember seeing mounted in his trophy room. As we watched in silence, through my own blurry eyes, I could see dad's eyes tearing up as well. It was a very heartfelt moment.

Had it not been for the kindness and thoughtfulness of Eastman Outdoors, and especially Guy Eastman, this would have never happened. It's the greatest gift I have, or ever could, receive. For that I am forever grateful. This tells me the kind of person that Guy is, and all the people involved in geting me this footage. These are the kinds of people that we need in the hunting commmunity. People that care enough to help others out when they can. I am forever indebted to Guy Eastman, and just wanted to publicly let everyone know. These people are heroes in my book.
