This will be my 4th year shooting this event sence I returned to archery.
My first year 2010 I finished 12th, 2011 I finished in 3rd.Last year 2012 I won my class.
I will be shooting this year trying to defend my title and woop up on my buddies again...LOL
It is a blast when everyone you shoot against are real good friends and you can give each other a good ribbing at a big shoot and no one gets pissy about it.
It's going to be a real good time flingging broadheads at at foam targets and real nice to see some old friends again.
Let you all know how I did and share some pics with you on Monday.
Here is a link with info on this shoot...http://www.cbhsaa.net/Broadhead.pdf

It's been almost 3 years, at Metro ASA ProAm in 2010. I was wandering around booths near the Bohning booth and come upon this older Pro Shooter and a on-going archery discussion. He pointed to the practice area, which was swamped with contestants. Here is what he it said; "You know, we're out there for a purpose. Those boys and girls just understand that if they didn't bring it with them they aren't going to find it out there."

Now, "we're out there for a purpose" is PR. Okay, Pros have their own practice range also, but they are "practicing" something of the same thing. Guess who's watching the Pros? Fans and prospective customers.
And of course, "bring it with them" is being prepared. If you think Pros need to practice a few minutes before a big shoot you best guess again. Them boys and girls can shoot lights out without even getting warmed up.

For quite some time I'm ready when I show up. I might fling a arrow or two while waiting on a sidekick, buts that's all and I really don't care if those couple of shots are off a bit as I know my bow is dead on. Many times I just go out. And it took some doing to break the habit and that's what it became, a habit. I wanted to "warm up" at every 3D, shoot 20 and 30 shots at least.

And then I went to this 3D and a archery dealer, Charlie, I knew well was there. We were to shoot together with some of his friends. I said I wanted to warm up and he came back with; "You don't need warmed up. Come on." And off we went without me flinging one arrow. I shot high overall that day. A month or so later and here was Charlie again. "Come on. Some 3Ds need killing." Off we went. I won again. That pretty much broke my habit. Again, I'm ready when I show up.

Hello everyone,
I ve already posted a thread about the tuning the fury xt cams and i am really thankfull for all the replies.
I am new to archery and i am searching for a target compound bow. Most of the people in the club where i practice suggested hoyts like pro comp elite, pro comp elite xl,contender etc and a couple of mathews conquest etc and the pse supra max, dominator etc. Well they look fine but i dont know whether it would be ok for someone new like me.
Well they all look the same to me(the aspects look similar with very few differences to some aspects).Remember,i am new to this thing.
The major difference though is the difference in price. Not to judge the quallity of Martins. That's why i started looking at Scepter V.
The bad thing is that i live in greece. The only bowshop has just a few compounds(maybe 3 available at the moment) and the Martin Archery dealer is located around 400-500 miles away from the place where i live.
So if possible,i would like to have a detailed preview about the scepter v from a target practitioner and a suggested set up(Stabilizers, releases, sights, scopes, etc).
Thank you in advance.

Almost turned around as it was raining, but got to Pekin and the rain must have turned.
Weather held and even got a little sun.

Club Pres and I shot together and I had another good day. Shot 286 for the 30 targets. Just wanting to get away from the flood clean up and have fun I shot for center 10s though 12s were counted. My score was made up of; Two 12s, twenty-two 10s, four 8s and two 5s. Lord, I hate 5s.

Don't know, just plain messed up on a long down hill Javalina, shot low. Around target 14 I shot a high 10 and then, brain dead, I added 2 yards to the next target and shot a high 5. Told DT the next target is dead meat and center punched that poor 3D deer perfect.

When DT got close to a 12 I did try and nailed two of four 12s. DT got in the 12 of a 30 yard Javalina and I nailed it. Felt good! Felt even better when DT groaned when my arrow slapped his ;)

Got to thinking (you guys better run). There are so many ways to aim. The absolute best way of aiming to make things fit you. Holding the bow as in proper grip and the peep just so. To me the best way is to pick up the bow and shoot right through the sights (peep and pin). And then aim real precise, center the pin just so, pin on the target and look at the target and shoot. More than likely the arrow will be off and can off up or down or side to side. So something is off. Move it! And perhaps take time inbetween doing this as not to get caught up wanting such perfection, if perfection is the proper word to use.

One of my practice routines for hunting is first shot kill. Yep, just cold, no warm ups and drill what I want to hit with the first shot. I won't shoot another arrow for maybe a hour or more and try again as I want that first shot to be as close to that of taking perhaps the only shot I'll get at a deer.

I believe in the target my main focal point and letting the pin move in to make a picture. Picture made I got into shot execution mode. The picture might have the pin float, but at the shot the arrow hits right where it's suppose to.

Sights all correct you can hit just about anything at any distance, just adjust to how you aim. I care whether it's centering the pin in the bull's eye or stacking the pin and wanted point of impact.

When I shot Field I stacked the pin and bull's eye to make a figure "8." I did good.

One of the top senior spot Pros told me he lets the pin settle in the bottom of the bull's eye on the 5 spot and set in the bottom of the 9 ring on the Vegas face. We were shooting the Vegas face and saw that he used a fairly larget dot, not gigantic, but looked bigger than 1/8".

We were playing around at the shop a while back. Pin point shooting was what we doing. D.H. (dummy) took aim on a target pin and drilled it. The target pin was a really long thin screw with Phillips head. He drove the screw so deep in the target bale we couldn't reach it. And the point of his glue-in parabolic point was a perfect fit for a Phillips head screw.

Beings "we didn't want to drive any more target pins into the bales we went for a dot made by a felt tip marker, maybe a hair over 1/8" diameter. Not overly big for 20 yards. Beings I was first up I had already set my pin so my arrow hit right on top the pin at 20 yards. So a bunch of spectators and the bets were on. It was one shot and one shot only and I bore down with that I could, relaxed, pin just so and the arrow was gone. The dot was gone and only my arrow sticking out of the white paper.

Did this with my Shadowcat a while back. Picture is of stacking pin and wanted point of impact for a figure "8." 20 yards I think, maybe more. Holes are soft plastic tubes to hold center in the Rinehart target bodies.

Shot the Black Diamond Archery 3D today. Nice weather, a bit cool, but walking and shooting was more than enough to keep you warm and I stripped down to a t-shirt. My sidekicks didn't show so I shot in between groups, one having too many as it was and other a family group.
Black Diamond does set some targets, 40 counters and this time they had a "pick 2 of 4" all Rinehart Catalina goats and "pick 3 of 5" all Rinehart turkeys. First time I've ever shot 3 turkeys in a row and shot 10s on all of them! Mercy! And the last target, a steel coon or a Rinehart coon. The steel coon was almost the same color as the target bale used for a stopper. I almost went for it, but one look at full draw I backed off and went for the Rinehart coon. Got to thinking and messed up shooting a 8.
3 longest targets were a bedded Elk (50 yards), a Caribou (42 yards) and a Mule deer (45 yards). The Caribou was set right out in the open and freaky was judging it. We that thought we had it nailed for distance shot high 5s. Elk and Mule were a piece of cake.

We really didn't mess around shooting the course. We started a little after 9:00 am and done by 11:45 am.

So I ended with a 385/400 (again, 40 targets). Black Diamond doesn't count 12s or X rings. So pretty descent score, but like the PSE Semi Pro in the group in head of me, I didn't turn in my score card.
Black Diamond shoots both Saturday and Sunday scores won't be posted until way later.
I believe it was said they had 62 shooters just today.

And the club had their chronograph set up. My MarXman's draw weight is either a shade more 55 pounds or a shade less that 56 pounds, so take your pick. The draw length is a measured 28 1/4". The Muddy Outdoors Virtue HT3 weight 322 grs.
Velocity check was 284.5 fps..... So I think great.

I R at odds with the ASA distances for 3D Traditional shooters, 20 yards maximum....Maybe because I know some dang good stick bow and recurve shooters.

B.O. is one the finest recurve bow shooters I know. From the Traditional stake he has turned in scores rivaling those of Bow Hunter Free style! And he really loves Field.
S.S. and his son, TD. are also quite good. I talked them in to shooting one of the last IAA 3D Championships and they finished 2nd and 3rd.

Our club set stakes for Traditional shooters with a max of 35 yards on large target, Elk and Caribou and all of targets maybe as close as 15 yards and farther. I've seen large deer targets set to 30 yards.

2011 ASA State Championship. I was grouped with 2 Traditional shooters. Me with a 40 yard max and them with a 20 yard max, I suggested we forego the rotation order and shoot first and them rotate. Why walk up and walk back for me was my thinking. And beings it was also raining made for better going if we did.
20 yards Max! Lord! When I stood right behind them it seemed like we were right on top the target. Heck, a little more and I could reach out with my 30" Cartel Stab and touch the targets....Well, it seemed that way.

As a kid I can remember shooting squirrels from 20 yards with my Fred Bear 60" recurve, rated 40 pounds at 28" of draw. In some cases I thought 20 yards a piece of cake. I even lobbed some my fiberglass fishing arrow that far at some the huge carp in the nearby creek and I got my share.

And then I grew up with American Sportsman and there was Fred Bear shooting pheasants on the fly. We didn't have pheasants, but we had ducks on the creek. My first trying at flying ducks resulted in tail feathers and I got serious after that. I got a few and 20 yards was easily the distance if not more.

So, all you Traditional shooters speak up. What do you think max distance should be for 3D? Especially, for those who would shoot the upper ranks of 3D, State and National level.

Thought I had this in here, but couldn't find it.

Presley's Outdoors in home the biggest Indoor Tournament in Illinois and has been running for a handfull of years. Max number of shooters is around 275 as that's all they can handle. Some big names take in this Indoor event, Chance Beaubuff one of notables. Kevin Koch, ASA Pro and ASA Rookie of the Year a couple of years back and many more.

Now, Presley's has started a Indoor 3D Tournament. 30 Rinehart targets, counting center 12, 10, 8, 5 and 0 scoring. To get to the Shoot Down there are 3 Qualifiers and the 2 best are taken for moving to the Shoot Down. There are only 2 Divisions, Money and Trophy. No classes, no age groups, no nothing. It's a "shoot what ya brung." Each Qualifier is $20 for Money and $10 for Trophy as is the Shoot down round.
Of the Shoot Down, it is a "head to head" competition thing. Both divisions are broken down, one half at 8:30 am and the second half at 10:30 am. As I understand the top two shooters of the first half then shoot it out with the top two shooters of the second half to detrimine 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. I would guess the Money Division is the same way.

Well, I shot the first Qualifier and placed 6th. I shot the 2nd Qualifer and my then average ranked me 7th. I shot the 3rd Qualifer and of course I had equipment failure, my 3rd ever and then average ranked me 13th.
Now for the "head to head" thing. I have never shot this type event, the head to head part anyway. You are paired with another shooter, so it's a one against one thing and several pairs shooting it out.
I was paired with EJ and we shot darned descent. EJ shot 8 up for a 88 and I shot 4 up for a 84. Our scores beat every one else in the second around. I had gotten a Bi and EJ had gotten a Bi. Regardless of shooting second high overall score, I was eliminated after the seond row.

There was this awesome kid, 12 or 13 maybe. He was eliminated on the next to last Shoot Down. The little tyke shot a 77. EJ, who I shot against moved to the final Shoot down, winning with a score of 80.

I left after the second half was about half done. I was done from getting up at 5:00 am and driving the 30 miles to Presley's. I and packed it in and went home. So I don't know how the Trophy Division finished.

Lucky me did get a door prize, a Trophy Taker X-treme SL - full capture drop rest. So the door prize was worth a bit more than my entry fee.

Weather broke and I got in a 3D! I will say I didn't shoot well. My bow was dead on....when I did things right and things didn't get in my way. Skimmed a tree branch (0 score) and then ducked to avoid a twig (5 points). Got stumped on this one deer (5 points) and totally confused I doubled what I thought I missed by and shot a 8! And four 5s! Lord! And then I called shots and make them!

And I thought; "Sonny, you done messed up." So the club Pres offered up the scores as I and LD were pretty much the last of the Adult shooters (45 yards max). Now get this, 12 counting; 1st place, 274. 2nd place, 273, 3rd place, 268 (yours truly). Unbelievable..... I figured I got my butt cleaned and I didn't think the course that tough. Now get this; 1st place is a 30 some year old kid I got started a few years back (so he owes me some points ;) ). 2nd place is 65 years old, 3rd, me, 64 years old. LD may have been 4th and 62 years old.

There were a handful of sort of steep downhill shots where footing wasn't the best and that got me a 5.

Of course, I had fun. LD and I both figured this one deer at 37 yards. Both us drilled side by side 8s. Walking up to the target I offered my and congradulated him for us having the prettiest pinwheel 8 I ever saw. So we ran a slug of 10s in a row and 4 targets were 30 yards in a row. So I told LD; Watch. So danged easy and the next will catch us flat footed. Sure enough, we both shot 8s, his high, mine low.
LD says; I wish you hadn't had said that, about us getting caught flat footed.
So we are coming in and here is this old gentleman I dearly like, GA, and, yep, me did it; "Dang, LD, I up and thought this a respectable establishment and here just let anybody in the gate."
