Congratulations on another tasty blacktail. :)
Thanks guys hunting has been slow for me this year to.But I just talked to a biologist and got permishion to hunt a new proberty should be a good late seasson.
Good luck to you in the late season, My favorite season, leaves are off the hardwoods, ground is soft and quiet, and the deer are moving around duing shooting light, especially when its raining, and both of us get plenty of rain during the late season. :)
Nice doe Coastie! What part of the Cascades do you hunt? When I moved from eastern oregon to western washington, I tried hunting blacktail up north of Seattle, but man they're like ghosts in this thick wet vegetation! Especially if you've got a buck tag; I'd never hunted so hard for deer in my life!
That's why I started hunting the east side of Washington, its more like home, even though I don't have access to farm land like I did back home. I guess I'm just a wuss! ;) Can't hang with you Coastals!
They're not quite so ghost like in the late season, although they're almost invisible in their 3 color winter coats, Tan, Black and gray, the color of the forest floor. The wet pushes 'em out into the open more, the constant dripping takes away their # 1 defence, their hearing, and so they'll move into the open, but not very far from the edges, so that they can see better. The hardest thing about blacktails is that they don't use the same trail each day, makes them very hard to pattern, They may show up at the same place every day for a week but they came by 6 differnt trails. :)
