You can still buy the replacements I did 2 years ago. The only problem is if you don't have the right crimping tool. You could have an explosion of a nice bow. The tear drops are a part of the cable...

You are correct in the fact that it would not be enough. Best bet is too have a string built at 2" shorter.

A well built string will have 1 twist every 1.5 inches. You can twist it up to ten more just to see if you can get it where you need it. But much more than that is pushing it.
