    Default I hate my subaru

    So 2 years ago I bought a 98 subaru forester, with 120,000 miles on it. A few months ago had to have the headgasket, timing belt and water pump and all done. Cost like 1500. So today on my way to a hospital call my car wont start. Have it towed from the office to home, and me and a buddy start digging into it. We take the timing belt cover off, and the cam shaft sprocket/pulley was in 10 pieces and there was a large rip in my timing belt. So the parts are cheap to fix, I dont know if the mechanic had replaced the sprocket, but the parts are cheap. The problem is there will be 3-4 hours of labor involved in getting to everything and then figuring out how to time the whole system. My buddy is offering to help, but there are no gurantees that the valves arent bent. With that said, I've been on call all weekend, and I took my residents on call starting monday through monday so I didnt have to be on call during the fall hunting seasons. Oh and to top it off my wife is a teacher and goes back to work on tuesday. So we have to carpool!!! yeah so much fun, been a great day.
    I may fix it and sell it, and not chance it all happening again. These things never happen at a good time. My wife has been off work for 2 months, having one car working would have been simple then.

    I hate fixing cars but sometimes you have no choice with cost of labor these days. Four hours? About as much as I could handle.

    Did it have plastic gears on the cam sprocket? Now days with labor so high it is pretty common to replace everything you can while the cam cover is off. That way these things don't happen. Of course people don't like fixing something that isn't broke so it is always a double edge sword for the mechanic that suggests it.


    Wiki isn't always 100% accurate but it doesn't look good for your '98 engine as it seems '97 and up engines are interference. If you have a SOHC you should be okay, if you have a DOHC you may be in for an expensive repair bill. Since it apparently happened when you last shut it down or on start up maybe the damage isn't too bad? Maybe!

    Sorry to hear about your Subaru. I'm no mechanic so I can't be any help there. I have a SAB-ARU, Saab - Subaru. My 92-x is made my Subaru in Japan the re badged for Saab. It's a 2005 and I have a little over 245,000 miles on it. I had the rear struts replaced. I have the fluids changed on time roughly. it's been good to use. We will be buying a new Subaru sometime before the snow drops. I love Subaru's AWD system. It's gotten me out of a few issue's.

    I used to love messing with cars, bikes and especially engines (V8 Fords are great fun to tune up), but I don't like modern engines at all, everything is integrated and interlocked to computers....YUK.

    A work mate of my son just found out that the oil pump on his VW Passat has failed. The pump on it's own is 1300. That's over $2000, plus another 500 ($800) to fit it.

    I can change the oil pump on a Triumph Bonneville in less than an hour, at a cost of $120; and twenty bucks of that is for my time.

    Modern machines eh?

    so we dug deeper and found an idler sprocket that seized up and caused the chain reaction. Good chance the valves are bent because its an interference motor. Worst part is I had the head gasket replaced 3 months ago, and supposedly all those parts were replaced. So I'm going to have a friendly conversation with the mechanic tomorrow. My motor is trashed, and the car is worthless, and I'm pissed.

    Maybe a rebuilt or salvage yard engine would get you back on the road quicker for little money?

    I've thought about it, at this point I'm fed up with the whole thing, and even if its fixed I will get rid of it. I've dumped more money into it then any other vehicle I've owned, and I've only had it for 2 years. I love the mpg for an awd vehicle, but the issues I've had outweight those things to much.
