I'm sure that I'd remember a Thanksgiving like that forever. Thank God and your good sense that you were prepared for the worst of the 'what ifs'. Even right there in your 'backyard' once the snow falls, nothing looks the same. Had to be frightning knowing that you were near the swamp and that the snow was covering all sorts of pitfalls. Like you, we also carry talkies, just in case. In fact there are a lot of 'just in case' items in my pack, darn thing is nearing 30#s. Hard luck in not recovering your doe, bet Ole Bob appreciates the full belly, and that he's wearing a nice coat right now. Thats one critter thats very high on my 'hit' list, have never had the oppertunity to get a shot at one. Really glad everyone is now safe. Do we have a smiley face for WHEW! ?

Dang Bill that's sure a Thanksgiving to remember for sure. Glad all worked out for you and the family. Bet the concerns were really high with your daughter along. Never thought about packing stuff since I also hunt so close to the house but maybe fire starter for sure now. Someone was watching over you thank gosh. Lessons to learn by for all of us.

Yeah Brad, saw too many people get lost around here and they were unprepared. Too many needing to be rushed to the hospital with hypothermia. Also people think it can't happen to me. Wrong! I knew the area well but and we were only a mile away from the house. So I can tell you it doesn't matter what you know or what you have with you, it is the decisions you make that help you survive.

    Bill,
Glad you made it out OK. Nice that you daughter was with you as I am sure she learned a lot of important lessons all in one day. I got lost this year when we had some snow in October. I felt like an idiot but the snow really changes things. Luck for me the property I was on is surrounded by roads in every direction, so worst case I just had to pick one direction and keep going. My wife's uncle hunts that property with me and always jokes about my pack, but I will not hunt without it.

I sure am glad there was a happy ending to this story! I hope that the kids learned from it and will always have it in their minds to be prepared. Good on dad for keeping his cool. I hope next year's turkey day is a little less exciting.

Thanks Guys, I sure know one thing. Even if you know your terrain you better be prepared. I am now in fact checking on some of the items we didn't have. Which was not many but I certainly want to be over prepared.
