The numbers are the year we were born, mine is 4x5= 1945, my son's username on other boards is elkslayer6x5 = 1965, and the grandson, elkslayer 9x8 =1998...Clear as mud, right? He just turned 16.
Bear in mind that these teams should be playing tougher games, but this JV team has been playing togather since little league, and for the last 3 years have been very well coached and conatantly drilled on baserunning, base stealing, as well as the other fumdamentals of baseball. Plus their coach has them in a special weight training class. They finished last year winning 68% of their games. This year, they are bigger, faster, hit better, field better, and commit fewer errors. Yesterday afternoon the coach of Umpqua Valley Christian HS team came over and asked the Cottage Grove JV coach if he would please have his team stop stealing bases.

What?! Base stealing is a fundamental right guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution!!!!

Happy to see Junior Varsity doing well, but then there is being courteous in slaughtering the opposition when of the school age.

Finally had another game yesterday afternoon, after the long and very wet spring break, had one game rained out and another canceled due to poor field conditions, The Coos Bays team, Marshfield High Pirates came to town to play on CG's 95 year old Kelly field. We were supposed to play them at thier home but the week of Oregon sunshine put a damper ( literaly ) on that, so they traveled. The Pirates led off with a solid double that eventfuly scored, but left a man on base. The Lions scored twice in their half of the 1st inning. Held the Coos Bay team scoreless in the top of the 2nd and then score 9 runs in the bottom of the 2nd. Elkslayer runs the scoreboard, Mrs Elkslayer keeps the scorebook, and I handle the number tiles ( old school scoreboard ) so we sit in the "crowsnest". About halway through the order in the bottom of the 2nd, I hear the Marshfield coach mutter "OMG! We are in trouble!" as the JV Lions pulled off a double steal. Final score 17-2, game ended with the Pirates 5th inning, another 4 1/2 inning game. Gottage Grove Lions are 5 and 0.
Today we travel to Philomath, to take on the Warriors. 71 miles north up I-5. Another non league game.

Knew it had to come sooner or later, and really don't mind losing a game, but sure hate to see the boys give one away like they did last night. We get up to Philomath, and finally find the school ( Thanks, google! ) and find out that its another snafu.. Philomath has just the one field, so the JV teams has to sit and watch the Varisity game. CG Lions 4..Philomath Warriors 2. Go Lions!
The JV teams started their warm up in the bottom of the 5th inning of the Varisity game, and when that game ended, took the field, did some wind sprints, watched the Philomath JV take infield drills, and it was game time! They didn't get to take any pregame infield or outfield drills, just Play Ball! The Warrior's starting pitcher had a good fastball, but lacked control. A huge change from the Marshfield pitchers who all threw in the low 60's, and the JV Lions go down in order after their leadoff batter gets hit by a pitch, steals 2nd, and 2 pitches later steals 3 on a passed ball, but is left on base.
The Lions starting pitcher hadn't pitched for two weeks due to a sore wrist, and struggled a bit during his warm up,but settled down. Batter up! The Warriors shelled him, 5 base hits in a row, But Jessie finally get his good stuff going and get the next batter looking. Next batter grounds to short, who boots the ball, and when he finally fins it, throws it in the dirt. By this time the Junior Lions have their heads down and start falling apart, another error allows the next batter to get to first and the baserunner to advance to 2nd. Fly ball to centerfield, caught, and the baserunner is doubled off at 2nd. The next inning, the Lion send 5 men to the plate and get 2 men on before the 6th batter strikes out. The Warriors pick up where they left off and by the end of the 2nd are up 8-0. Lions score 2 in the 3rd and Warriors score 2. 8-4 Lions leave 2 men on in the 4th. 8-4 Now the boys really come apart, pitcher hits the batter, next batter grounds to 3rd who can't come up with ball, pitcher hits another batter, bases are loaded, Wild pitch! Run scores. Next batter caught looking, one down. Base hit, run scores. A walk loads the bases again. Pitching change! Fly ball to left, 2 down, next batter hits a double, 2 runs score. Fly ball to center. 12-4 in the 5th. The Lions again go down in order. Relief pitcher walks the 1st batter, error allows 2nd to get on, next batter hits down 1st base line and another error allows him on, bases loaded. Passed ball scores a run. Next batter strikes out, and a fly ball to right makes it 2 down. A wild pitch allows the man on 3rd to score and the game is over. 14-4 top of the 6th. JV Lions are now 5 and 1.

    League Play at Last
After having one team move up in leagues, thereby canceling the scheduled start of league play on Monday, yesterday afternood, Cottage Grove Lions hosted the LaPine Hawks. Off to an ominous start, the Hawks scored 1 run in their half of the 1st inning, but the Lions answered with 1 run to tie it up, then held LaPine scoreless for the next inning, while they scored 6 more runs. In the top of the 3th, the hawks score twice more. And then the Lions took over, ending the game in the top of the 5th, 3 up, 3 down. Final score 13-3. Must have been a long bus ride home as the Lapine Varisity also lost their game in 4 1/2 innings, that score 12-2. Lapine is a 2 1/2 hours drive up over the Cascade Crest. The lions have 2 more games with them, next game at Lapine. JV Lions now 5 and 1 in pre-season and 1 and 0 in League play. GO LIONS !
