Thanks for all the good wishes. We are getting to hunt the rut, but I hear it's a little too warm for them to really get fired up. Might be some tough hunting. I think it'll mostly be calling, and some spot and stalk. Hoping to get a good bull, and a wolf as well. Figured I'd take along a few predator calls I use on coyotes, and see if that helps bring in some wolves. Of course, there'll be plenty of pictures when I get back. Hopefully of 3 moose. lol Take care all!

Well, the trip out wasn't too bad, other than the 2250 miles it took to get there. The first day hunting, our guide got us all lost about 9 miles back in the brush, so we had to backtrack our way out. Things went WAY downhill from there. All I will say is do NOT use Burnt Lake Outfitters for a moose hunt. I'll stop complaining now, and post pics when I get them offloaded from the camera. Good to be back!

Welcome back EH, sorry to hear about the guides poor performance. Looking forward to the pictures, speaking of pictures I hope that means you had success despite the poor guide service. Sounds to me that you made the best of a bad situation and that speaks volumes for you and your fellow hunters on the trip. I am overjoyed you back here safe and healthy, getting lost 9 miles in Canadian bush could turn deadly in a heartbeat.
Glad you made it back Ehunter! As Chip said being lost in the Canadian bush could have been deadly.Real sorry that your guide got you lost. Other than the real long drive and getting burnt by Burnt Lake Outfitters, how was the trip?

We saw no moose at all, and other than one day I went out on my own for a morning hunt, had no encounters with moose. That day I got winded by one, and heard it run off. Not much moose sign in the area we were in, and the "guides" hadn't done any previous scouting or anything to try to find them. It was all a matter of riding around on the backs of quadrunners trying to cut a set of tracks. 6-7 hours a day on the back of a quad tends to put me in a bad mood. We'd finally cut a set of tracks, and the "guide" would drive another couple miles down the path, then call. Didn't make sense to me. Any animal should be closer to where the tracks they left are. Not to mention, they almost never called INTO the wind or across the wind. For some reason, they thought straight down wind was a better calling option for an animal with a good nose. ???????? Finally, after 7 1/2 days of being on the back of a quad, I said enough. My brother and dad could barely move their arms from holding on to a quad all day, so we talked to the "outfitter/head guide". It was not a good conversation to say the least. He ended up taking 25% off the total of our hunt, and we left 2 1/2 days early. We had 2 guides for 3 hunters. One 21 year old kid that had hunted moose with his dad a few times (the guide that got us lost), and the outfitter himself. Not only did the kid get us lost, while he was guiding my brother one day, he fell asleep during the hunt. C'mon...really? By day 5, he had basically given up on finding any moose, and just kept hunting the same unproductive spots with no moose sign day after day. The outfitter himself was one of the most egotistical, know-it-all SOB's I have ever met. All he wanted to do was talk politics, and tell me why my thinking was wrong, and how he knew the truth about everything. Had we seen a few moose, I could have tolerated that, but as it was..... By day 5, both "guides" were completely worn out. Dragging their feet, stumbling, wanting to go back to camp earlier each morning, and go back out later each day. Some days we couldn't even get them up and going until 9 am or so. NEVER did we get out before daylight, and only once stayed out until sundown. By day 6, they wouldn't get off the quads and walk more than 100 yards. Day 7, I don't think we ever got off the quads. That's the lowlights of the trip, but plenty more than that happened. Got some good bonding time with my dad and brother until the drive back, then even that turned out badly. Everyone tired and pissed, so it wasn't a fun trip back. I did get some good pics of the scenery though, so they are in the next few posts.
