Shot my second NY bear with a Martin(08 Moab, 63 lbs, 29"), this one while on the ground still hunting. Quartering to, 20 yard shot with a NAP Nitron tipped CX Maxima Hunter; she ran 30 yds and was down in sight.

In response to the questions about how we hunt black bear in NY: no bait, no dogs(anymore), long seasons, everyone gets a tag w/ license. They really try to keep the numbers down to avoid conflicts with people. For hunting NY is divided into North and South, I live in the Northern Zone, mostly woods and mountains. The bear season is long, starts in mid Sept with rifles. Not many bowhunters up North: last year 606 bears were taken on the Adirondack region, only 39 by bowhunters: in my county 61 were taken, only 1 by bow.![]()
There were lots of bears around last Fall looking for food; I kept hearing reports of them close to here. Sounded like they were headed North and I did the same, trying a couple spots; mostly after deer but figured I might get lucky with the bears. I really wasn't expecting to run into them, it was the afternoon of the first ever youth hunt in NY for deer. I was still hunting along slowly when I glanced to my left and spotted what first looked like two people, it was two bears both were standing up. They were downwind and must have smelled me. I dropped to my knees, next thing they were at 20 yds and headed at me; drew back, aimed and it was all over in less than a minute.
Got my first bear from a treestand 5 years ago, I had seen some tracks but was looking for deer; a young male feeding on acorns walked right under me. Later my neighbor told me he had seen him stealing tomatoes from his garden. Saw a smaller bear alone the next week that year. Saw my first and only other bears while bowhunting in Oct. a couple years earler, a sow with two full grown cubs; they left sign all over the mountain near the oaks that year, really liked the chesnut oaks.
