I would take your experimental excerise as more educational after your results, obvious that the buck were ready and interested. Could be that is when grunting works best, early rut, pre rut. It sure did where you were hunting.

Here's another one for ya. Didn't get much time with him on the camera, had my wind blowing right in his face. He hung out for about 10 minutes give/take little. Worked a little scrape about 30 yards out, nibbled on some of the green that is stil up . Fun to watch.
