Default Got My Wisconsin Bear Harvest Notification today!!!

    WHOOOO HOOOOOO !!!!!

I just recieved notification that I was drawn and am eligible to purchase a bear harvest permit this year in Wisconsin. It takes about 10 years of applying in the northern zones to get a kill permit and 4 years in Zone "C", the southern Zone where I live. I applied for a Zone "C" kill permit for the last 3 years and got it this year.

I am stoked. Got my new Martin Cougar FC all set up. Bear season opens before our archery deer season, so if all goes well, the first kill will be a bear!

We have quite a few Black Bears in Wisconsin and the population is growing. There are more bears now than ever before in my life time. When I first started hunting at 12 years old a deer hunter could shoot any bear they came across and then just go register it. I believe it was in the early to mid 80's that the state started to change the way they managed the bear. Dog and bait hunters started to fight between each other allowing the anti-hunters to drive the wedge in deep! The DNR closed bear hunting in Wisconsin for 2 years and formulated the drawing that we have now. More than 22,000 bears, (according to the DNR) inhabit Wisconsin. About 9500 permits are given out a year between 4 different zones. 104,000 applications are received approximately each year. Average hunter success is about 50% or about 5,000 bears a year.

The bear population in the area where I live is increasing alot because of bears dispersing into it as they over populate the northern parts. I see more bear every year while bow-deer hunting, especially in years where there are alot of berries and acorns early on in the archery deer season. We have had two deer taken by bear in the past 4 years when we've left them over night to recover the next morning. The first one the bear was still on the carcass when we arrived on scene. The second there was only a hide left and every bit of meat and fat was completely licked from the hide. From the prints it looked like a sow and two cubs. Both were questionable hits of my brother on does. Both though after finding the remains we could have gone after within a few hours. We don't leave deer over night any more. Now the wolves are moving south into our area too.

Nice, hunt smart and shoot well my friend! Oh and good luck to, that usually helps.
