Default Question about an old bow

I picked up an old 1997 Firecat XRG with the carbon flex limbs. 55-70lb draw, and the setup is 30". Anyway, it was brand new in the box and I picked it up from a guy for almost nothing. I knew that I wasn't really going to do much with it, but I couldn't pass it up. It still had the original strings/cables on it, so those needed replacing. I went ahead and did that. I found the specs online for the lengths, and verified with the techs at Martin. 65" string, 45" cables. That's also what came off of it. (On the bow the string length was specified, but not the cable lengths.)

It has the z-cam cams that say "Z-CAM +" on them. The modules are "x" type modules, and supposedly there are a lot of model Martin bows that take these. I'm looking for some in the classifieds, but here is my question. I have two other bows, (a PSE and another Martin) both set to 30" draw, and they draw to almost the same exact place on my draw board. The Firecat with the 5x module (30" module) draws about an inch over. Is it common for them to be off that much? I've read that certain manufacturers draw lengths vary somewhat, but usually not that much. Is there anything else I might have done wrong? Everything looks good to me. I set the timing and corrected any cam lean on the draw board. Strings/cables as far as I can tell are routed properly. I took a lot of photos and all that before I broke the bow completely down. (I wanted to re-lube the limb bolts and such.)

I'm not familiar with the Z cams, its before my introduction to archery. I do know that Martin tends to go long on draw length though. If the ATA and Brace are in spec, you may have to try another module to get where you need to go....

Other than that, you need to post some pics of your new find, we rather enjoy bow-porn around here Oh, and welcome to the forum.

You could twist up the string a bit and see if it will get you close enuff without going to a 4x mod.
It will only change the dw and bh slightly.
(there was X mods on ebay a week or so ago - dunno if they are still there)

I am on the lookout for mods right now. I have a few feelers out so we'll see how that goes. The Ebay ones are too expensive - I think I can do better than that. They guy has two versions, metal and aluminum. The metal ones he wants $36.00 a set for. I don't think so. The aluminum ones he wants $20.00 a set for, but they are molded aluminum and won't take a screw as well - they could come loose or something. Just going to hold off until I find the metal 4x mods.

    Bow Porn…

    Hardly. LOL

This thing is 16 years old. I just threw on a $10.00 sight I had in the closet along with a cheap stabilizer that I had laying around. Shot it the other day to find that Martin's 30" draw length on this bow is NOT 30". It's more like 31.5".

It appears you have the limb bolts backed off quite a bit. This will add to the draw length; probably 1/2" or so. Still, this leaves you an inch to make up for. Have you called Brandon at the warranty dept? Martin may still have some X mods laying around.

You could also take some twists out of the cables and add some to the string. This will decrease the draw length and the draw weight, but you can get the weight back with the limb bolts.

    Thanks again guys.

The limb bolts aren't backed off quite as much as it looks, but I know what you mean. The bow is marked 55-70lb. draw, and I currently have it set at about 58 lbs. (I'm not sure how accurate my scale is, but it seems to be pretty close.) I didn't even consider the draw weight affecting the draw length. Thanks for pointing that out.

Thanks for the suggestion on the string/cable twisting. I might give that a shot and see what I can come up with. I just need to find time to get back out to the shop to play with it. I'm still working on getting one of my other bows in line after getting a new set of strings, so that's been the priority.

    Ok.

I took 5 twists out of the cables and added 5 to the string. The draw weight seems to have been reduced considerably (I didn't get it on the scale yet) but the draw length may have only come down 1/2". I'm just going to have to hold out for the 4x modules. If all else fails I'll call Martin and see if they have any more sitting around anywhere. Like I said, I just can't pay the $36.00 a set that the guy is asking for on Ebay. Martin likely doesn't want much less than that though. LOL I need to find someone who has some sitting around in an old box somewhere. I've got a few feelers out at some pro shop owners on AT, but it's just getting them to pull out the old boxes to look that's the hard part. I'm anxious to shoot it.

Beautiful bow, nice find, I like new old stock. My Cougar is only a 10 year old bow that has only been used for 3 years.
