Sadly, setting a trap like that would get you thrown in jail here in Kansas. I think the guy got off easy with just some paint on him and his gun.

Funny for sure, but like Ehunter noted, you'd get jail time in Illinois. Worse if the paint had hit the guy in the eyes. Lawsuit wrote all over it.
Sadly, this did happen to a home owner. Robbed several times, he set a booby trap, the would be thief was injured and the resulting lawsuit had the home owner sell his house to pay the hospital bills and injury claim. Because it was a booby trap situation the home owner's insurance was not liable for claims. Still, a happy ending of sorts. All the neighbors went together and "bought" the owner's house so he would lose it.

Saw this on AT yesterday. As one poster noted, the victim might have a hard time proving who placed the booby trap unless there were finger prints or some other evidence, Even then, who's to say it wasn't a leftover from some paintball competition that got forgotten. Being from Pa. I'd be interested in knowing the location.

This trespassing situation is pretty common here. Especially among the older set who think that because they have hunted a particular place all their lives they think they have some claim on it and just plain disregard the owners' wishes or the law. There's no justification for it. There are multiple public hunting grounds and state forest totaling probably hundreds of thousands of acres, all open the public at no cost.
