Martin Jaguar Takedown Recurve string length

Hi, I saw that the Jaguar is a 60 inch bow. How come it says it comes with a 55 inch string? I thought the string should be 57. Any idea?

The standard for most bows for string length is 4" shorter than the bow. Martin ight have come up with 55" for their own reasons. In any case, 57" would be too long and the brace height would be too low.

That being said, if you buy a string you still get one marked for 60" AMO.

Hey, thanks for the info. But, it seems like you're telling me to buy a 60" AMO string which would be 57", when you just said that would be too long above. Am I confused?

A 60" AMO string should come out of the package at 56".

I just picked up a new string. The bow is 60" and the string is 14 strand 56" long. But, I put the string on without twisting, and the brace height is 8 1/4". The specs say it should be 7". Do you think this will be okay? The string is to AMO specs. Or do I have to get a 57" inch string for this?

These are things you can play around with to customize the bow to your liking. A slightly higher brace height will reduce the power stroke a bit so you'll lose some speed. Normally though you'll gain a little forgiveness and the bow shold shoot a little more quiet.

If you are shooting a multistrand string you can go a little longer (say 56.5")and add twists to the string. This can make the string more table as the strands get bundled together tighter so act more as a unit.

It's been many years since I shot a traditional bows and have forgotten a lot, but the general concensus is that you can do a lot of playing to get the feel you want.

Interesting. I emailed Martin and they said to use a 57" inch string as it should be 3" less for this bow. Yet, I left the 56" string on overnight. The brace height is now at 7 1/2" which is the upper end of the brace height of 7" to 7 1/2".
